Taylor 428 Troubleshooting Guide
The Model 428 doesn't show digital fault codes — it tells you what's wrong through its ADD MIX and MIX OUT indicator lights and a manual RESET. This guide walks every problem in the official Taylor troubleshooting table — no product, product too thick or thin, leaks, a scored cylinder — with the operator fix and the OEM part when one is needed.
Reading the Controls & Indicator Lights
Most "is something wrong?" questions on the 428 are answered by the front panel. Before you troubleshoot anything, confirm the machine is in the right mode and read the lights.
Power switch (rocker)
- Center = OFF.
- Right = AUTO — runs the beater motor and the refrigeration system. This is the serving position.
- Left = WASH — runs the beater motor only (no refrigeration). Used during cleaning, sanitizing, and priming.
ADD MIX light (flashing)
The hopper is running low. Refill it as soon as possible to avoid drawing air into the cylinder.
MIX OUT light (flashing)
The hopper is empty. To protect the machine, refrigeration shuts off automatically until you replenish the mix. A flashing MIX OUT light is normal behavior, not a fault.
Standby switch (toggle)
Left = Auto, Right = Standby (maintains safe product temperature during long no-use periods). The power switch must be in AUTO for Standby to function. Standby is not a substitute for daily cleaning and sanitizing.
Viscosity adjustment
Turn the screw on the upper right side (under the display light) clockwise for thicker product, counterclockwise for thinner. After any change, let the refrigeration system cycle two or three times before judging the result.
How to Reset After an Overload
If the beater motor overloads, the freezer shuts down automatically. To reset it properly:
- Place the power switch in the OFF position.
- Wait 2–3 minutes for the motor to cool.
- Press the RESET button on the left side panel.
- Move the power switch to WASH and watch the freezer run.
- Return the power switch to AUTO.
If the machine keeps tripping out on reset, stop and call a technician — repeated overloads usually point to a refrigeration or drive problem, not an operator error.

When to Call a Technician
Some 428 symptoms aren't operator-serviceable. Stop and call Taylor Upstate if you see any of these:
- Beater turning counterclockwise or not at all in AUTO (rotation correction is a service procedure).
- Repeated overload trips after a proper reset.
- No compressor operation after the condenser is verified clean.
- A scored freezing cylinder, or a bent beater assembly.
- A worn rear shell bearing, or a driveshaft/coupling with rounded corners.
